Bio
Chris Butcher is a trombone player quickly establishing himself as a unique force in the Canadian music scene. Brought up in a musical family Chris’ love of good music grew by listening to his father’s jazz collection and seeing many live shows with his parents.
Chris lives in Toronto, having moved recently from his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since relocating Chris has been very busy playing with many of the finest Jazz musicians in the country as well as a diverse collection of Cuban, Brazilian, World and Pop artists, people like: Hilario Duran and his Latin Jazz Big Band, Archie Alleyne’s Kollage, , Luis Mario Ochoa’s Cimarron, Pat Labarbera, Maninho Costa’ s Batucada Carioca, Richard Underhill, Roberto Linares Brown, Don Thompson, Caché, Steve Kirby and many more.
On occasion Chris has played with some of the finest international artists of our time: Chris Potter, La India, Kurt Elling, José Luis Quintana “Changuito”, and Dave Douglas. While clearly one of Toronto’s first rate sidemen, Chris also leads two groups of his own, The Heavyweights Brass Band and The Lower Etobicoke Sound, both contain some of Toronto’s best young jazz musicians.
Still in his early twenties, Chris is building a reputation as a fine young musician as he was selected as one of three finalists in the International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz trombone competition, and there is no telling how far he will go. What is sure, however, that listeners will be enjoying Chris’ music for many years to come.
